Address Stamps: Wooden or Self-Inking – Which Suits You?

In our family workshop in the Vogtland, in Germany, we've been making stamps for over 30 years, and there's one question we hear again and again: "Should I get a wooden stamp, or would a self-inking one be better?" What should go on an address stamp?

Before we get to the design, it's worth a quick look at the content. The classics are quickly listed:

• Name – for example your full name, or „Familie Müller“ (The Müller family)
• Street and house number
• Postcode and town

If you like, you can also fit in a phone number or email address. That's handy if you also use the stamp for returns or business post. Our honest tip from the workshop: better clear than crammed. An address stamp personalised with three clean lines looks calmer on the envelope and stays more legible than six tightly squeezed lines packed with every detail. On our wooden stamps, for example, 3–4 lines are possible – enough for everything important, while still leaving the design room to breathe.

The wooden stamp: charm and sustainability

A wooden address stamp is the classic choice – and for many people, simply the nicest way to stamp their own return address. We make our wooden stamps from FSC beech wood and engrave the stamp plate precisely by laser. The result is a small piece of craftsmanship that simply looks good on the desk: warm wood, crisp engraving, pleasant to hold.

A wooden stamp needs an ink pad, since it doesn't carry the colour itself. That might sound like a drawback at first, but it has a nice side effect: you're completely free with colour. Classic dark today, a different colour from your collection tomorrow – with different ink pads, you can recombine your impression any time you like. Open, stamp, move on: especially when you have lots of envelopes to get through one after another, the self-inking stamp really shows its strength, delivering many impressions in a row without you needing to re-ink in between.

Sooner or later the impression fades – that's normal for any self-inking stamp and not a reason to replace it. With a self-inking stamp, an empty pad can be swapped in seconds: old pad out, new pad in, carry on stamping. As a workshop, this point matters a lot to us: refill rather than replace. A good address stamp isn't a throwaway product, but a companion for many years – as long as you treat it to a fresh pad every now and then.
